Powell, Yellen Say They Underestimated Inflation And Supply Snarls (M1 Money Grew At 369% With Rates Near Zero Since COVID And They Didn’t See Inflation Coming???)

The Dream Team (Fed Chair Jay Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen) just can’t believe that inflation struck even after M1 Money Stock increased by 369% from March 2020 to today while interest rates remained near zero.

From The Hill: Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Wednesday said they underestimated how quickly the U.S. economy would rebound from the COVID-19 recession and strain supply chains.

During a Wednesday hearing before the House Financial Services Committee, the top two U.S. economic policymakers acknowledged that high inflation has risen higher and lingered much longer than they expected.

“We understood demand would be strong,” Powell said. “We didn’t understand [the] significant problems of the supply side.”

Both Yellen and Powell said substantial fiscal and monetary stimulus played a role in stoking the higher demand that fueled inflation, but they called it a challenging side-effect of an otherwise fast recovery.

Seriously? The Fed and the Federal government dumped trillions of dollars into an economic system and didn’t think there would be negative consequences??

Look at the surge in M1 Money Stock at the same time asset-backed commercial paper rates are 0.08%. That is, about 1/3rd The Fed Funds Target rate (upper bound). None of this concerned The Dream Team?

An example of what The Dream Team didn’t see happening was the explosion of home prices. Home price growth was about 4% YoY prior to COVID, and is now 19.51% YoY.

Now we have the US Treasury Actives curve inverting like the US Dollar Swaps curve after 20 years.

US Home Prices “Slow” To +19.51% YoY In September (Phoenix AZ Sizzles At +33.1%, Chicago Slowest At 11.8%)

When I told Benzinga’s Phil Hall in an interview a while back that I thought US home price growth would slow, I didn’t consider the never-ending COVID epidemic (now with the Omicron Variant taking the stage. But at least the CoreLogic Case-Shiller National home price index (HPI) “slowed” in September from +19.84% to +19.51%.

Once again, low available inventory of houses for sale coupled with outlandish Fed stimulus has resulted in a housing crisis where home price growth (+19.51%) exceeds hourly wage growth (+5.76%) by almost 4x.

Where are all the home prices above 10% YoY? Every one of the 20 metro areas covered by Case-Shiller. Phoenix AZ leads at +33.1%. Chicago IL is the “slowest” at 11.8%.

Although Columbus OH is the growth hub of the state, Case-Shiller only reports Cleveland. So here is Columbus’s all-transactions home price growth for Q3: +16.2% YoY placing Columbus at the top of the midwest metro areas of Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis and Cleveland.

With the latest Omicron Variation (sounds like a Star Trek TV show episode), I will bet that The Fed will stay a little longer and keep rates low, leading to home price growth (with limited available inventory) to continue to grow at double digit speeds.

The Fed is printing SOOOO much money that the dollar should have a double eagle on it.

Treasuries Curve Flattens Sharply After Data Dump, Fed Minutes (Market Update)

Anyway, Treasuries ended mixed Wednesday with the yield curve sharply flatter after a raft of U.S. economic data and minutes of the November FOMC meeting bolstered expectations for an earlier start to Fed rate increases. Two- and 5-year yields reached YTD highs, and 5s30s spread reached narrowest since March 2020. 

Over the past week, the Treasury actives curve rose 13.85 basis points at the 2 year tenor.

Yields ended richer by ~6bp across long-end of the curve, while front-end cheapened almost 3bp; 2s10s flattened more than 5bp, 5s30s more than 6bp; 10-year yields shed ~3bp to ~1.635%

The US Dollar Swaps curve rose from the previous week as well.


Minutes said participants considered elevated inflation as likely transitory, “but judged that inflation pressures could take longer to subside than they had previously assessed”

Earlier, front-end and belly sold off after a heavy slate of U.S. economic data including the lowest initial jobless claims tally since 1969

Also during U.S. morning, Fed’s Daly said she would support accelerated tapering of asset purchases, which added to pressure across front-end Treasuries

Subsequently, eurodollars traded heavy over the session as rate-hike premium continued to ramp up in 2022 and 2023; overnight index swaps showed 30% chance of a March hike, while around three hikes — or 75bp — were priced in by the end of next year

Biden Picks Powell Over Brainard, 10-Year Treasury Yields Rise (10Y-3M Treasury Curve Rose From 83 BPS At End Of 2020 To 160 BPS Today)

President Biden nominated Jerome Powell for a second term as Fed Chair and nominated Lael Brainard as Deputy Chair to replace Richard Clarida. The US House of Overlords (aka, the US Senate) will hold hearings on the nominees (with Elizabeth Warren opposing Powell and supporting Brainard’s nomination).

Treasury yields jumped and U.S. index futures signaled a continued selloff in technology shares as traders pruned bets for a dovish-for-longer Federal Reserve after the renomination of Jerome Powell as its chair.

Contracts on the Nasdaq 100 Index fell 0.3% after Monday’s last-hour selloff in technology stocks. The subgroup was the worst performer in Europe Tuesday, sending the region’s benchmark to a three-week low. A currency crisis deepened in Turkey, with the lira weakening past 13 per U.S. dollar. Zoom Video Communications Inc. lost 9% in premarket trading on slowing growth.

Investors are reducing expectations for a deeper dovish stance by the Fed after Powell was selected for a second term. The chair himself sought to strike a balance in his policy approach saying the central bank would use tools at its disposal to support the economy as well as to prevent inflation from becoming entrenched.

Fed Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic said Monday the U.S. central bank may need to speed up the removal of monetary stimulus and allow for an earlier-than-planned increase in interest rates.

Translation: Markets are pricing in MORE hawkish Powell over uber-dove Brainard. The 10-year Treasury yield has risen from 1.52% to 1.65%

And the 10Y-3M Treasury curve has risen from 83 basis points at the beginning of 2021 to 160 basis points today. I will this the Biden Inflation Effect (BIE).

Let’s see if Powell & Company deliver on removing the excessive stimulus from the market, particularly with midterm elections approaching.

Misery! Inflation Overwhelms Improvements In Unemployment (Misery Index Above 10)

The Misery Index, inflation plus unemployment, is over 10% at 10.80%.

Unemployment has been steadily declining since the COVID shutdowns of 2020. The real culprit has been rapidly rising since COVID as well. At this point, inflation improvements (that The Fed is chasing) have been overwhelmed by inflation (which is being caused by The Fed’s monetary policy and Federal policies).

Powell has said that he is not going to raise rates until unemployment has improved, but risk more explosive inflation in striving to improve unemployment.

How I feel about Biden announcing Powell’s reappointment and uber-dove Brainard appointment as Deputy Fed Chair.

The Fed’s Gilded Age: A Tale of Today’s Housing Market (REAL Home Prices Rising At 14.6% YoY As REAL Hourly Earnings Fall (-0.41% YoY)

Welcome to The Fed’s Gilded Age … for housing! The gilded age refers to the thin-veneer of gold covering up problems in the late 1800s.

Today’s gilded age is largely fueled by The Federal Reserve’s uber-easy monetary policies combined with absurd Federal government policies. The result? Thanks to inflation, REAL home prices are growing at 14.6% YoY while REAL hourly earnings are declining (-0.41% YoY).

Redfin predicts a more balanced housing market in 2022. Part of their rationale is that they predict mortgage rates will rise to 3.6%. This growth in the mortgage rate is predicted to slow home price growth to 3.2% from double digit growth currently.

While this scenario is plausible, it will require a change in direction of the 10-year Treasury yield which has been declining since 1981. 5.39% YoY inflation may encourage The Fed to raise rates.

Today’s REAL 30-year mortgage rate is -3.08% while the REAL 10-year Treasury yield is -4.67%. It will require a reduction in inflation AND an increase in the nominal rate to get to 3.6%.

With the Freddie Mac 30-year survey rate at 3.10, will a 50 basis point increase in mortgage rates send the market crashing? Not likely.

After all, the US economy is under the thumb of The Federal Reserve.

T-R-O-U-B-L-E! Apartment Rents UP 33% Over Past Year, Food UP 33%, Heating Oil UP 89% And Gasoline UP 61% (Affordable Housing Policies??)

The Marty Stuart/Travis Tritt song “This One’s Gonna Hurt You (For A Long, Long Time)” seems appropriate for the plight of the middle and lower income classes in the face of high inflation. How do you spell the combination of President Biden’s policies and The Fed’s inaction on inflation? T-R-O-U-B-L-E … for the middle and lower income classes.

Over the past year, since the election of Joe Biden, the household consumption bundle (food, rent, heating, gasoline) have all risen dramatically in terms of prices. Food is up 33%, heating oil is up 89%, regular gasoline is up 61%, and effective apartment rents are up 33%.

Meanwhile, the 1% are sitting high on a mountain top obvious to the pain caused by The Federal Reserve and Biden Administration. Here is the growth in wealth by the 1% since the housing bubble burst and financial crisis compared with the bottom 50%.

A problem facing renters is the rapid growth of home prices particularly since the COVID epidemic. At least M2 Money has “slowed” to 12.80% YoY while home prices are raging at almost 20% YoY. But hopefully home price growth will slow with declining M2 growth.

Slipping Into Darkness? Inflation + Growing Recession Probability = Stagflation?

The smoothed US recession probability just rose to 44.40%. Meanwhile, the CPI YoY rose to 6.24% YoY.

The Fed has been lowriding rates since late 2008.

Why can’t The Fed be friends with the middle class instead of just the top 1%?

JOLT! Job Openings Changed Little (10.4 Million In September) As UMich House Buying Sentiment Declines Even Further (To 62 From 144 Last Year On This Date)

The Federal Reserve continues to JOLT markets with excessive monetary stimulus despite numerous reasons why they should back off.

For example, today’s JOLT report (US job openings) revealed that 10.4 million jobs were open in September. This is the fourth consecutive month of 1 million plus job openings, yet The Fed refuses to raise their target rate.

At the same time, the University of Michigan survey revealed that buying conditions for houses dropped to 66 (baseline of 100). To show how bad this is, buying conditions for houses was at 144 this time last year.

UPDATE: UMich revised their number downward to 62, the lowest since 1981.

In The Fed’s mind, they are still chasing at least 3.5% unemployment, the lowest rate under President Trump prior to COVID. But with perpetual million plus job openings GOING UNFILLED, trying to get to pre-COVID unemployment rate of 3.5% is a fool’s errand.

Of course, with The Fed helping to pump up house prices to largely unaffordable levels, it makes sense that enthusiasm for buying expensive homes has crashed.

Meanwhile, The Fed continues to JOLT the economy with excess stimulus.

Overall inflation fears are leading to lowest consumer confidence since 2011.

PLEASE stop JOLTING US!!

The Fed’s Folly Of Full Employment (Real Hourly Earnings Growth At -0.814% YoY, Labor Force Participation Remains Below Pre-Covid Levels)

If The Federal Reserve is actually looking to achieve full employment in the USA, then it is a fool’s errand.

Today’s jobs report is both good and bad. The good news? 531k jobs were added, more than expected. The U-3 unemployment rate fell to 4.6%, also better than expected.

The bad news? REAL average hourly earnings growth “rose” to -0.8141% meaning that inflation is outpacing wage growth (despite what Joe Biden said yesterday).

Look at labor force participation both in October and before Covid. After the large decline in LFP, it rose again then leveled-off to near where it is in October 61.6%.

Here is the rest of the story. Zero Hedge had the enticing headline of “October Payrolls Soar To 531K, Smashing Expectations As Prior Months Revised Sharply Higher”. Too bad inflation is eating away at the gains.

Biden: “We have increased labor force participation by inches.”

Employment in leisure and hospitality increased by 164,000 in October and has risen by 2.4 million thus far in 2021. Over the month, employment rose by 119,000 in food services and drinking places and by 23,000 in accommodation. Employment in leisure and hospitality is down by 1.4 million, or 8.2 percent, since February 2020.
