April Inflation “Cools” To 8.3% YoY, But Food Up 9.4%, Gasoline Up 43.6%, Shelter Up Only 5.1%? (Real Avg Weekly Earnings At -3.4% YoY)

April’s inflation numbers are out and, at first glance, inflation seems to be cooling from 8.5% YoY in March to 8.3% YoY.

But the headline inflation numbers do not accurately reflect the pain and suffering of American households. Food is up 9.4% YoY and gasoline is up 43.6% YoY.

The strange way the BLS measure “shelter” shows that housing only grew at 5.1% YoY. That’s odd since home price growth is almost 20% YoY and rent growth is near 20%.

Runaway home prices and rents are especially painful given that inflation is destroying the purchasing power of the dollar for consumers. Real average weekly earnings YoY are at -3.4% YoY.

Hence, the purchasing power of the US Dollar keeps eroding.

Good luck out there with inflation still roaring, and food/housing/energy prices soaring.

Here is a photo of American children trying to create energy from flying a kite made from progressively devalued US currency.

Morning Update! S&P 500 Futures UP, Mortgage Rates UP To 5.57%, Apartment Rents UP 20% YoY, WTI Crude Down -1.76%

At least S&P 500 futures are up this morning, an opportunity to buy the dip.

But on the housing front, we see that mortgage rates have pieced the 5.50% barrier and is now at 5.57%.

On the rent side, apartment rents are growing at 19.3% YoY for both Class A and Class B units.

Commodities are down this AM. WTI Crude is down -1.71%, iron ore is down -4.06% and nickel is down -6.29%.

Whoops! After a positive futures reading before opening, the Dow is down near a full percentage point, but the NASDAQ is almost breakeven for the day.

And the 10-year Treasury yield is down 8.6 bps.

As The Boss sang, “We’re going down.”

10Y Treasury Yield Hits 3% Then Retreats, Europe Suffers A Flash Crash (US Dollar Rises As Powell & The Gang Signal Tightening)

Today we saw the 10-year Treasury Note yield break through the 3% barrier, then retreat as is there was a reflecting barrier at 3%.

And in Europe, we saw a flash crash allegedly caused by Citi’s trading desk.

The selloff was triggered by a large erroneous transaction made by the U.S. bank’s London trading desk, according to people with knowledge of the matter who asked not to be identified discussing private information. A knee-jerk selloff in OMX Stockholm 30 Index in five minutes wreaked havoc in bourses stretching from Paris to Warsaw toppling the main European index by as much as 3% and wiping out 300 billion euros ($315 billion) at one point.

The US Dollar rose again as expectations of Fed monetary tightening due to inflation become a reality.

Bond Rout Boogie by Powell and The Gang!

Is YET another Fed error in the making??

Already Gone! U.S. Manufacturing Index Falls to Lowest Since 2020 As Fed Signals Removal Of Monetary Stimulus (As 10Y Treasury Yield Tries To Breech 3% Barrier)

What happens when the massive Fed stimulus is gone? Its Already Gone … or going.

A measure of U.S. manufacturing activity unexpectedly dropped in April to the lowest level since 2020 as growth in orders, production and employment softened.

The Institute for Supply Management’s gauge of factory activity fell to 55.4 last month from 57.1, according to data released Monday. The Manufacturing Prices index remained elevated.

As the 10-year Treasury yield tries to breech the 3% barrier.

And as The Fed continues to threaten tightening of their monetary follicies, the S&P 500 index is down 14% since Dec 31, 2021.

And the NASDAQ had it worst monthly loss since 2008.

Medusa Touch II: REAL Wage Earning Growth Remains Negative, Reverse Repos Continue To Grow, Lithium Prices And Mortgage Rates SOAR

President Biden (or whoever is pulling his strings) is inflicting a “Medusa Touch” on the US. That is, everything his administration touches turns to stone.

Yesterday, I walked through the rise in energy and food prices under Biden, and it is horrific. The only “disinformation” was generated by the Biden Administration itself claiming that soaring inflation is due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I demonstrated that inflation began with Biden’s anti-fossil fuel executive orders and the Russia invasion only made things worse.

Let’s look at average hourly earnings. Thanks to “progressive” energy policies from Biden, REAL average hourly earnings growth has crashed and burned.

But here is the chart that the Biden Administration touts showing average hourly earnings growth at 5.6% YoY (although I doubt if Jen Psaki would leave out the massive distortion caused by The Federal Reserve’s “Let’s go crazy!” monetary policy.

Another Medusa Touch moment is the reverse repo market. When I wrote about reverse repos before, several people wrote me saying “You don’t understand. This is a temporary problem and will vanish shortly.” However, The Fed’s reverse repo facility has now climbed to an all-time high.

Then we have the disruptive effects of The Federal Reserve deciding for us that mortgage rates are too low and should be higher.

Now look at lithium prices, a key element for electric car batteries. Making the switch from Internal combustion engines to electric motors far more costly.

The list goes on and on.

Suffice it to say, everything the Biden Administration touches turns to stone.

But I wager that the Biden Administration wishes that Hunter Biden’s laptop would turn to stone.

Only an elitist DC bureaucrat like Joe Biden would laugh at inflation that is ruining the lives of millions of Americans.

Spot The Loser! Japan’s Yen, China’s Yuan or Russia’s Ruble (Russian Ruble Bounced Back While Yen And Yuan Have Crashed)

I hope America’s foreign policy wizards (Biden, Harris and Blinken) weren’t relying on the Russian Ruble staying pulverized, because the Ruble (relative to King Dollar) has regained all its losses.

On the other hand, the Japanese Yen and Chinese Yuan have crashed harder than Biden’s popularity.

Actually, The Atlanta Fed’s flexible price inflation rate is 25%, up from 3.90% Pre-Joe.

Perhaps Biden, Harris and Blinken think Putin is a pasta sauce.

Reversal Of Fortune! How Fed Monetary Stimulus And Federal Covid “Relief” Made The 1% Wealthier And The Bottom 50% Worse Off (Fed Anticipated To Raise Rates By 100 BPS At Next Two Meetings)

The Covid epidemic was bad enough with the government shutdowns and deaths. But was even worse is that all the Fed monetary stimulus and Federal government stimulus “relief” led to a reversal of fortune. In that, the share of net worth held by the top 1% grew and the gap between the 1% and bottom 50% hit an all-time high.

Now that the 1% have fed at the Federal trough, The Fed is anticipated to raise rates by 100 basis points at the next two meetings.

Remember, REAL average hourly earnings are getting crushed under Biden and his pro-1% policies.

This is a nightmare for the American middle-class and lower-wage households.

Inflation Joe And Slow-Walking Jay! REAL Fed Funds Target Rate Lowest In History As Bidenflation Crushes Middle Class And Low Wages Workers (REAL Home Price Growth Is Now LOWER Than The Peak Of The 2000s House Price Bubble!)

Inflation Joe and Slow-Walking Jay. The bullies of the middle class and low-wage workers.

As inflation crushes the middle class and low wage workers, we see that the REAL Fed Funds Target Rate (based on headline inflation) is the lowest in history. Notice that the REAL Fed Funds Target Rate tends to hit its lowest negative reading DURING recessions, although The Fed has had a poor track record since the Dot.com bubble burst and the 2001 recession meaning that the REAL Fed Funds Target rate has been in negative territory (that is, the rate of inflation has exceeded The Fed Funds Target Rate for much of the post-2000 era).

The “good” news? Inflation caused by The Fed’s negative interest rate policy (NIRP?) has actually led to REAL home price growth to slow 11.6855% YoY, lower than the peak of the 2005-2007 house price bubble.

With The Fed’s OVERSTIMULATION of markets with historically low REAL Fed Funds Target Rate, we can see that the US unemployment rate is overheated (that is, below the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Short-term Natural Rate of Unemployment. Yes, it appears that Slow Walking Fed Chair Jay Powell should be raising The Fed’s target rate AND removing (at least) the Covid monetary stimulus.

Inflation Joe is a career politician, so it is not surprising that he is trying to blame Russia for the horrid inflation in the US. However, inflation grew from 1.4% when Biden took office to 7.9% when Russia invaded Ukraine. The latest inflation report was 8.5%, so Russia is only partly to blame for rising prices since February 24, 2022. The rest is due to Inflation Joe, Slow Walking Jay and Congress.

Again, Congress helped drive prices through the roof by massive Federal spending (aka, Covid stimulus “relief”). Hence, the Four Horsemen of the Inflation Apocalypse is appropriate. And now Biden is once again pitching massive government spending (Build Inflation Back Better?).

Here is Joe Biden and his inflation bat, Lucille.

Have a peaceful and pleasant Easter Sunday.

Stimulypto! How The Federal Reserve Helped Drive Property Taxes Above $10,000 In New York City (NYC Home Prices UP 26.3% Since February 2020, Chicago UP 21.7%, LA UP 32.5%)

As we are all aware, The Federal Reserve launched its monetary “stimulypto” in March 2020 to combat the Covid virus. Coupled with the surge in Federal stimulus, we have seen home prices rise over 20% since February 2020.

Specifically, New York City home prices are up 26.3% since February 2020, Chicago home prices are up 21.7%, and Los Angeles home prices are up 32.5%. Fed monetary stimulypto is up 113% since February 2020.

Of course, this has resulted in soaring PROPERTY TAXES as well. According to Attom Data Services,Among 1,481 U.S. counties with at least 10,000 single-family homes in 2021, 16 had an average single-family-home tax of more than $10,000, including 12 in the New York City metro area. The top five were Kings County (Brooklyn), NY ($13,734); Marin County, CA (outside San Francisco) ($13,719); Westchester County, NY ($13,674); Essex County, NJ ($13,116) and Nassau County, NY ($13,095).”

Of course, not all metro areas raised their property taxes. Major markets with the largest decreases in average property taxes included Pittsburgh, PA (down 35.1 percent); New Orleans, LA (down 20.2 percent); Houston, TX (down 18.7 percent); Dallas, TX (down 12.2 percent) and Austin, TX (down 7.7 percent).

States with the highest effective property tax rates in 2021 were Illinois (1.86 percent), New Jersey (1.73 percent), Connecticut (1.67 percent), Vermont (1.55 percent) and Pennsylvania (1.37 percent).

Even if The Federal Reserve removes its massive monetary stimulypto (MMS), property taxes will remain elevated unless cities reduces their property tax rates. But Democrat-controlled cities tend to be addicted to spending much like The Federal government.

You might as well face it, they’re addicted to gov.

Panic In (Fed) Needle Park! Mortgage Purchase Applications INCREASE Despite Rapid Rise In Mortgage Rates (FEAR Of Further Fed Taking Away Punchbowl)

Today, the US Treasury 10-year yield exploded upwards by over 12 basis points. With it, the 30-year mortgage yield is above 5%. And MBA Mortgage Purchase Applications are actually increasing.

Today’s bond market summary shows the 10-year Treasury yield up 12.7 basis points. Its the same all over the western world. Asia? Not so much.

Fear of further Fed fireballs coming from removal of the monetary punchbowl.
