Wreck Of The USS 30Y Treasury! Disastrous 30Y Auction Sees Rising Long-term Treasury Yields

Today was the Wreck of the USS 30Y Treasury. Disastrous Federal fiscal policies and Yellen’s slowness to refinance outstanding Treasury debt has created a mess. Biden’s nerves must be a wreck with Powell and Yellen managing the nation’s finances.

That’s the only way one can describe today’s 30Y auction, which many expected could be challenging after a mediocre 3Y and a subpar 10Y auction earlier this year, but nobody expected… this.

The bond priced at a high yield of 4.769%, which was below last month’s 4.837%, and just shy of the April 2010 high. But more importantly, it tailed the When Issued by a whopping 5.3bps, which was… well… terrible, because as shown in the chart below, this was the biggest tail on record (going back to 2016).

The bid to cover was just as bad: at 2.236 it was the lowest since Dec 2021.

The internals were even worse as foreign bidders (Indirects) tumbled from 65.1% to 60.1%, the lowest since Nov 2021, and with Directs taking down only 15.2%, banks (Dealers) were forced to step up and take the balance, or a whopping 24.7%, double the recent average of 12.7%, and the highest since Nov 2021.

This is a big warning flag because every time we have seen a surge in Dealer takedowns, some sort of Fed intervention – QE or otherwise – has usually followed and we doubt this time will be different.

So what happened? Well, maybe the bond market read our note from earlier this week in which we explained “How Treasury Averted A Bond Market “Earthquake” In The Last Second: What Everyone Missed In The TBAC’s Remarkable Refunding Presentation.” It may be difficult to fool the bond market for a second time.

The market reaction to the catastrophic 30Y auction was immediately, sparking a swift and painful response across markets with bonds and stocks hammered lower and the dollar spiking.

Treasury yields  – as you would expect – exploded higher, with 30Y Yields back up to pre-payrolls levels…

That is the biggest spike in 30Y yields since March 2020…

But the entire curve is higher in yields…

Stocks tanked…

Regional bank stocks tumbled…

The dollar ripped back up to pre-payrolls levels…

Finally, we note that this ugly auction comes as Treasury Liquidity is evaporating dramatically…

The Fed (and The Treasury) have a problem!! Particularly since the 30Y yield reversed course and is on the rise again.

And at the 10 year tenor, the rate rose to 4.638%.

All together now!!

Livin’ La Vida Biden! Biden Administration Threatens Banks That Refuse To Lend Money To Illegal Immigrants As Biden Relaxes Oil Restrictions On Venezuela (IF Venezuela Allows Non-Maduro Candidate To Run For President)

We are Livin’ la vida Biden as Biden continues to push illegal immigration and working with Communist dictators like Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and NOT expand US energy production.

The Biden administration released a statement Thursday warning financial institutions against using a person’s immigration status in credit applications.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) released a joint statement telling financial institutions that while it is not illegal to consider a person’s immigration status in the decision on whether to lend money, an overreliance on it could run afoul of the law, according to the statement. The statement implicates the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), which makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex and more in considering a person’s credit application as the mechanism, even though the law does not list citizenship status as a protected attribute.

US, Venezuela to announce oil sanctions deal on Tuesday -report.

The result? WTI Crude is down almost -1% today and Brent Crude is down over -1%.

The sad part of Biden’s deal with brutal Marxist dictator Nicolas Maduro requires Venezuela to allow another candidate to run against Maduro in the next Presidential election. What? Biden and Democrats are working hard to eliminate Donald Trump from running for President in 2024, but want Venezuela to have competition??

So, Biden is sticking to his anti-US energy production stance while supporting a brutal Marxist dictator AND forcing banks to lend to illegal immigrants.

Joe Biden and brutal Marxist dictator Nicolas Maduro.

Biden’s Incredible Shrinking Economy! Bank Credit Growth Negative For 10th Straight Week As Interest Rate On Short-term Loans Almost 10%!! (Ouch!)

Bidenomics is failing catestropically. Example? As interest rates rise to fight Biden’s Federal spending splurges, bank credit growth slowed to -0.41% YoY for the 10th straight week of negative credit growth.

While interest paid on short-term loans almost 10%!!

“Jimmy, watch me tank the economy even worse than you did!”

Fear The Talking Fed! Treasury Rates Keep Climbing To Multiyear Highs As Fear Of More Rate Hikes Surfaces (Treasury Yields Decouple From Sinking Manufacturing Numbers)

Fear the talking Fed! Various Fed Presidents are talking this week and when they do. WATCH OUT!

The latest fear mongering will be … inflation is persistent and they might have to keeep raising rates.

The two-year Treasury remains above 5% and the 10Y-2Y T-Curve remains inverted.

Treasury 30-year yield rose to 4.856%, HIGHEST SINCE 2007.

The likelhood of another Fed rate hike is growing.

While inflation is cooling (but still elevated), The Fed could choose to rate hikes again.

Treaury yields have decoupled from US manufacturing data.

Is Bidenomics The Highway To Hell? US Existing Home Sales Declines 17 Of Last 19 Months As Fed Slowly Shrinks Balance Sheet (Federal Debt Exceeds $33 Trillion As Unfunded Liabities Exceed $194 TRILLION)

Is Bidenomics the proverbial “Highway to hell”?

The most recent report on US exisiting home sales showed that sales decreased in 17 of the last 19 months as The Fed tightens monetary policy to combat inflation caused by … 1) The Fed and 2) Bidenomics spending on green energy.

The US housing market will be “back in black” once Biden and Congress stop their reckless spending and borrowing. Biden has added $5,352,202 to the national debt since being selected (not by me!). That is a 19% increase in The Federal debt in just 33 months!

Not to mention the ludicrous $194 TRILLION in unfunded liabilities that the geezers in the Biden Administration (Biden is 80 and slipping into dementia) and the Geriatric wing of Congress (the US Senate) is home to fossils like Mitch McConnell (not looking well) and Diane Feinstein (90 and looking poorly). I didn’t forget about Nancy Pelosi (Communist-California) who is 83 and running for re-election. Younger doesn’t necessarily mean better since Pelosi’s nephew California governor Gavin Newsom is 55 years old and helped destroy California’s economy. Of course, the DNC will probably selected Newsom to replace scandal-ridden Biden as the Democrat in order to finish the job Obama started.

Existing-home sales slipped again in August as rising mortgage rates make housing prices the least affordable ever. Despite denials in many corners, a crash is underway.

The National Association of Realtors® NAR® reports Existing-Home Sales Decreased 0.7% in August.

Highlights

  • Existing-home sales retreated 0.7% in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.04 million.
  • Sales dropped 15.3% from one year ago.
  • The median existing-home sales price climbed 3.9% from one year ago to $407,100, an increase of 3.9% from August 2022 ($391,700). It’s the third consecutive month the median sales price surpassed $400,000.
  • The inventory of unsold existing homes dipped 0.9% from the prior month to 1.1 million at the end of August, or the equivalent of 3.3 months’ supply at the current monthly sales pace.
  • First-time buyers were responsible for 29% of sales in August, down from 30% in July and identical to August 2022.
  • All-cash sales accounted for 27% of transactions in August, up from 26% in July and 24% in August 2022.

And mortgage rates are now up to 23 year highs!

If Biden bows out and Newsom runs for President … and loses, Newsom always has a career in Hollywood in vampire movies. “I will suck your (economic) blood!” – Count Newsom.

Mortgage Applications Increased 5.4% Last Week, But Purchase Demand Still Down -26% YoY And Refi Demand Down -29% YoY (Despite Mortgage Rate Rising To 7.31%)

Mortgage applications increased last week, despite the 30-year fixed rate edging back up to 7.31 percent – its highest level in four weeks.

Mortgage applications increased 5.4 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending September 15, 2023. Last week’s results included an adjustment for the Labor Day holiday.

The Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage loan application volume, increased 5.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Index increased 16 percent compared with the previous week. The Refinance Index increased 13 percent from the previous week and was 29 percent lower than the same week one year ago. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index increased 2 percent from one week earlier. The unadjusted Purchase Index increased 12 percent compared with the previous week and was 26 percent lower than the same week one year ago.

UAW’s 20% Wage Hike Demands Just Coping With Bidenonomics (Gasoline Prices UP 70% Under Union Joe While Food CPI Up 20%)

The Big Three auto companies and the UAW are suffering under Bidenomics (code for massive green energy payoffs to large donors). As I pointed out yesterday, the auto industry suffered a large decline of -7.60% in Q2 as a result of rising car prices (going electric is EXPENSIVE) and increasing consumer debt to cope with Bidenomics.

So when we consider the UAW’s demands of $20 an hour hike in pay, you have to consider that under “Union Joe” gasoline prices are up 70%, and food CPI is up 20%. So a 20% pay hike won’t even cover the cost of commuting and will just cover the increased food costs.

The shortened work week to 32 hours? How European of the the UAW.

But perhaps they will have the extra time to travel to Paris France to eat some beef au poivre at Le Bistrot Paul Bert.

US Beginning Credit Super Cycle (Bidenomics = Inflation, Rising Debt, Rising Delinquencies) Mortgage Rates UP 158% Under Bidenomics

Thanks to Bidenomics, code for massive Federal spending on green energy initiatives and payoffs fo large donors, we have agonizing inflation and consumers are borrowing more and more to cope with inflation. And with the increased use of debt comes …. drumroll … delinquenices!

Let’s start with mortgage loans, the overall delinquency rate is 63bps, near record lows, likely due to the huge home appreciation of the last few years which padded the equity cushion for most homeowners. Even the youngest cohort (18-29 years old) has a delinquency rate only 30bps higher than the aggregate. Unlike the 2007-2011 period, the credit cycle is not playing out in the real estate market.

The US conforming mortgage rate is UP 158% under Bidenomics.

Let’s move on to some forms of consumer loans, where the story is a little more daunting.

Auto loans are definitely the epicenter of the credit cycle. While the overall average is a still somewhat tame 2.41%, younger borrowers are not keeping up. Younger borrowers have delinquency rates that are 1-2% higher than the average while the inverse is true for older borrowers. Eighteen-to-thirty-nine year-old borrowers have the highest delinquency rate in 13 years.

Somehow, I sense that used car lots are going to start filling up again as these vehicles get repossessed. This should put downward pressure on used car prices, bringing that element of inflation down. This is one of the channels through which monetary policy works.

Lastly, I’ll take a look at credit card delinquencies.

Here is where we can really see the stresses building.

  • First, the overall delinquency rate has about doubled from 2.5% to 5% over the last couple years.
  • Second, older borrowers have seen a tick up in delinquency rates, a feature we don’t really see in other credit products.
  • Third, one in 12 younger 18-29 year-old borrowers are 90+ days late making their credit card payments.

Credit Card Delinquency Rate across all commercial banks hit 2.77% in the 2nd quarter, the highest level in more than a decade.

In conclusion, we are in the early days of a consumer credit cycle. Younger borrowers are the weakest link in this analysis, and this makes me wonder where rates go when student debt payments turn back on at the end of the month.

Bidenomics 101 (Mortgage Rates) Conforming 30Y Rate UP 155% Under Biden, Home Prices UP 32% (Fed Balance Sheet Still Exceeds $8 Trillion, UP 10% Under Vacation Joe)

Under Bidenomics, there is still too much Fed monetary stimulus in the form of >$8 trillion on its balance sheet. While the biggest surge in Fed activity occurred with Covid, The Fed has added 10% to its balance sheet under Billions Biden.

Despite not backing off the assets purchases by The Fed, conforming 30Y mortgage rate is still up 155% under Bidenomics.

Yes, The Fed is raising its target rate to cool inflation, but doing little with its balance sheet.

The Case-Shiller national home price index is up 32% under Vacation Joe!

It seems prices are out of control and The Fed refuses to trim its balance sheet. But don’t worry, Vacation Joe is probably on yet another vacation while Maui and Flordia suffer and The Ukraine war is seeing bodies pile up. Meanwhile, he still hasn’t visited East Palestine Ohio like promised.

“Soviet Joe” Biden Bails Out US Auto Industry With Up To $12 Billion In Loans/Grants As Green Energy Mandates Crush Auto Industry (Shades Of Banking Crisis, Another Federally Created Monster!)

Soviet Joe Biden, who is a believer in Soviet-style command economies where rather than rely on free market capitalism, we now have CC (Crony Communism) running the US economy. Into the ground. But in the tradition of bad Federal policiies, Soviet Joe and Energy Secretary Granholm (with help from Congress) mandate green energy transition at all costs, watch the auto industry suffer, then bail them out. Sounds a lot of like the banking crisis of 2008 where The Federal government pushed homeownership until it helped almost collapse the banking sector, then the Federal government bailed out the banks. Rinse, repeat, bailout. And the bailout of banks in going! (Notice that The Fed has barely shrunk its $8+ trillion balance sheet!).

Automakers are looking to finish the week with strength after it was announced on Thursday that the Biden administration would be making “up to $12 billion” available to retrofit facilities to make both EVs and hybrids.

The money will include $10 billion from a US Energy Department loan program for clean vehicles and an additional $3.5 billion in financing to expand domestic battery manufacturing, according to Bloomberg

The United Auto Workers, currently in negotiations with Detroit, has argued that a shift to EVs will cost the industry union jobs. US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Thursday that the funding would help Detroit retain workers.

However, we’ve seen this “bailout” business model to save jobs before – at banks and during Covid, to name two examples – and it always winds up turning into a company cash grab before ultimately firing workers regardless. The UAW will try to prevent such a situation from taking place as it negotiates.

UAW President Shawn Fain “cautiously” welcomed the news after warning earlier this month that the White House should not push an EV agenda if it means the loss of jobs in Detroit.

Almost like the government should stay out of the auto industry as a whole, right? But that would make too much sense.

“The EV transition must be a just transition that ensures auto workers have a place in the new economy,” Fain said this week. Meanwhile, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a Washington lobby group that represents most Detroit automakers, said this week the funding “will further advance the domestic automotive supply chain and globally competitive battery manufacturing platform that automakers have already made sizable investments.”

Instead, Bloomberg calls the move the Biden administration “doubling down on efforts to support carmakers’ transition to EVs”. In a statement this week, President Biden said: “This funding will help existing workers keep their jobs and have the first shot to fill new good jobs as the car industry transforms for future generations.”

The Biden administration continues to aim for half of all vehicles on the road being EVs by 2030.

Oh and now that UAW Boss seeks 46% raise and 32-hour work week. Reminds me of Federal student loans where students run up massive amounts of debt to major in useless degrees like political “science” and gender/race studies, yet universities hire more admininstrators.
